Why won't my car start? Here's 5 common problems that could be why

\

It can be absolutely frustrating to jump in your car and have it not start. Fortunately, many car starting problems are fairly easy to diagnose. Depending on the symptoms of trouble that you are experiencing a technician can usually pinpoint the problem pretty quickly. These are 5 of the most common problems that will prevent a vehicle from starting. Often times there will be some sort of trouble before your car finally decides to quit working completely so at the first sign of a problem be sure to reach out to your local auto repair shop.

Fuel System Problem

There are two main things that can be an issue with the fuel system. A clogged fuel filter won't allow the gas to the engine, which is a simple repair. Secondly, if your fuel pump fails then the vehicle will not be able to pump the fuel from the tank to the engine, resulting in an engine that will just turn over and over without firing up.

Faulty Ignition

If your ignition fails the the car won't be able to be started. Signs of a bad ignition include the key not turning, flickering dash lights or if your vehicle stalls while driving.

Bad Starter

If turning the key results in what sounds like a loud single click, or a series of click, click, click noises there is a good chance that you have a starter motor problem. Sometimes you can rock the car back and forth to get it running, but you'll need a new starter to completely resolve the issue.

Bad Alternator

The alternator is what keeps your vehicle's battery charged. If the alternator fails the battery will quickly be drained of power and you won't be able to start your car after the next time you turn it off.

Dead Battery

One of the most common reasons a vehicle won't start is if the battery dies. A battery can die if lights or other accessories are left on while the engine is off. In this case you will just require a jump start to get restarted, but batteries do die completely after several years of use, which will require them to be replaced.
