Every part of your car is crucial to for a well running machine. Several of the parts under the hood make up the cooling system, which is tasked with regulating the operating temperature of the engine. Rising Temperature Gauge
It's important to pay attention to what your dashboard is telling you, as it's full of useful information, aside from the speedometer. One gauge displays engine temperature and if it ever appears to be higher than it should pull over as soon as possible and get in touch with your mechanic.
White Steam from Hood
Should you miss the temperature gauge creeping upwards you certainly won't miss the next issue that will happen, which is white steam pouring out from under the hood. This is a sure sign of overheating. Pull over and shut your car off as soon as it is safe and legal to do so. You may need to add coolant to the system before proceeding.
Low Coolant Levels
From time to time pop your car's hood and check its fluid levels, including the transmission fluid, oil and coolant. Should you discover that the coolant level is low it is likely due to a leak, which can occur inside or outside of the engine. You may run into one of the next two issues if your car or truck does have a leak.
White Exhaust Smoke
If the coolant, also known as antifreeze, is leaking into the combustion chamber you may experience white exhaust smoke. Unfortunately this could indicate that your engine will require more extensive repairs to get back up to speed.
Visible Antifreeze/Coolant Leak
If you discover a bright green fluid dripping under your vehicle than you have likely just found a coolant leak. The cooling system cannot operate as it should without proper fluid levels, so be sure to have this addressed as soon as possible.
