Does your Engine Need Repair? 3 Signs that Say Yes!

It's a great feeling to be able to hit the gas and travel the seemingly endless highways of America. The engine roaring and tires spinning, it's a dream come true for many people. But it's a dream that can be shattered by poor maintenance or high mileage. If your car starts to suffer you should head to an auto repair shop to have the problem properly diagnosed, as engine problems will only get worse. If you notice one of these common symptoms of engine trouble don't hesitate making a diagnostic appointment to ensure the problem gets addressed right away.

Excessive Exhaust Smoke

Large clouds of exhaust smoke often indicate impending trouble for your engine. Depending on the color of the smoke you can usually diagnose the general cause of the problem. White smoke means that coolant, aka antifreeze, is being burnt up in the combustion chamber. This means there is an internal coolant leak that is putting your vehicle at risk of overheating. Black smoke means your car is running very rich, burning way too much fuel. This can burn cylinder rings and increase the operating temperature of the engine leading to a need for major repair. Blue smoke indicates an internal oil leak that is allowing oil to be burnt up. This puts your engine at risk of major metal on metal friction which will lead to premature wear and tear of engine parts.

Lack of Power

If your car no longer seems to be able to get up to speed like it use to or struggles to climb hills you'll want to head to the mechanic to find out why. Many times this type of problem is caused by a fuel delivery issue. However it may be caused by wear and tear of the engine's moving parts which can reduce compression and lower the power output of the engine. If you're lucky this problem is being caused by a clogged air or fuel filter! Talk to your mechanic to get to the bottom of the issue before it gets worse.

Loud Knocking Noise

Remember when you first bought your car and it ran so smooth you could hardly tell that it was on. It's quite a difference with that knocking noise going on under the hood. This loud sound is usually caused by worn out engine bearings, which is what the moving parts of the engine rest on. If they begin to wear out due to a lack of lubrication or just high mileage the knocking sound will begin to occur. Head to the shop the first time you hear it to increase the chances of saving the engine!
